The plateau and himalayan winter

Life of each human being is like a drop of water.

Tibetan proverb

The scorching desert will gradually turn into a cold one, sand into snow, but always the same lack of the precious trickle of liquid water. Once more, I will have to adapt to weather extremes in order to share the hard life of the Himalayan people. Because after following the Himalayan plateau and crossing the Karakorum Pass shortly before winter, I will be isolated in a Ladakh valley and experience among the winter shepherds the coldest temperatures of this expedition.

Is it necessary to present this region so close to heaven, out of time and space, which has so much haunted so many travelers ? Whether Fathers Huc and Gabet, Colonel Prjevalski, Rockhill, Alexandra David Néel, Ella Maillart, or the Indian spies working for the British Crown and so many others. There, some have gained glory or a reason for living; others have lost spirit and lives.

Apart from the geographical, cultural and religious fascination inspired by this part of the world, the Himalayan plateau is also the great water tower of Asia. All the big rivers that flow through the plains of the Himalaya valleys fertilize them and bring a billion people their subsistance, like the Gange river not far from the Ladakh country.
