Why this journey?

To experience the different aspects of dependence on water by taking time in the highlights of this trip during the most dramatic seasons. Water is both the guideline and a link to others. Indeed, the rough environment will, I hope, be an incitement to solidarity, exchange and sharing.

To understand the different links between men and water: whether they are simply geographical or climatic, religious, practical or professional. Meeting persons that have outstanding experiences with water should reveal more of its different aspects.

To compare the hydraulic and hydrologic projects of each explored region (by interviewing professionals and visiting job sites) with my own field experience. This approach will assess man's capacity of adaptation to technical and political necessity for its exploitation and control.

To learn how to share the staple values by following a few principles of life: those passed on by an untiring and remarkable traveler, Ella Maillart, who could not conceive of discovery and learning without being on the spot; or by a wise old Tibetan who would recommend the hardest way, being the most enriching...
